On Children’s Health: Expensive Is Not Always The Best
Who doesn’t want the best for their children, raise your hand!
Like all mothers, working or not, we only want to give the best things to our children.
The advantage of having my own job and income is I can choose the best stuff I can afford for my children especially when it comes to food. I got this attitude from my mother-in-law who once told me that we can be frugal at most things but not with food for our family.
I feel you’ll also agree with me that health is more important than anything else. For me, my children’s health is at top priority ALL THE TIME.
Giving them healthy meals is the most surefire way to keep them fit, strong and able.
But what I always want to add to their daily sustenance are vitamin supplements. You can say I’m a believer of vitamin supplements.
Although when it comes to vitamins, I have learned that the most expensive is not always the best and not always the most effective.
Here’s why.
A few posts ago, I shared how the pediatrician of my children advised on limiting the vitamin intake of my children since the brand I was giving them has a special formula.
She also recommended several other “regular” vitamins, as our pedia puts it, to replace the other supplement brand during the “rest period” she advised. She also mentioned that it’s sometimes better to have children just take the “regular” ones continuously if there’s really no chronic health condition that needs to be addressed on a child’s health.
She recommended several brands of “regular” vitamins and I opted for Tiki-Tiki Star Syrup for Children.
I’ve known the brand since I was a child and as of this writing, I’m 34 years old. Now you know my age.
In fact it has existed for more than 100 years already here in the Philippines according to its Facebook page. It’s truly an unbelievable fact and it’s so affordable too. I’m really amazed at how its manufacturing company Unilab continues to produce this product and sells it at a pocket-friendly price.
Actually, I consider this vitamin brand really cheap because the one with the special formula I was giving to my children before sells at around $13 per 120 ml bottle. Tiki-Tiki is just around $4 for the same quantity.
And so I bought Tiki-Tiki. At first I just wanted to comply with the rest period the pedia advised but turns out I got hooked with this brand.
You see, with regards to my youngest daughter, I know Tiki-Tiki will have good effects. She was taking this same brand (the drops) when she was a baby and boy, was she healthy! Not once did we need to have her confined in a hospital. All the illness she has had were minor cases, if that’s the medical term for it and can be treated at home in just a matter of days. She was that strong! Until now, she seldom gets sick.
It’s a different case for my son though. He’s the skinny and sickly type. So I’m more worried how this change will affect his health.
It’s been 5 months since we bought our first bottle of this brand and Tiki-Tiki has proven me wrong and washed all my worries away.
This brand which I considered “very cheap” strengthened my children’s immune system. Another good news is they have a much better appetite and gained some weight since then.
I’m just so thankful.
I know I’ve got my children’s pediatrician to be thankful for too.
She’s the kind of doctor who does not always prescribe expensive vitamins, milk and medicine. What she stresses is for children to eat right at the right time of the day everyday.
I guess you don’t always get what you pay for.
NOTE: I’m not a medical professional. I’m only sharing what the doctor of my children advised me. This brand may not be good for all children so it’s still best to ask your trusted doctor for advice all the time.
I hope you found this helpful so don’t hesitate to share it!
Come to think of it, if a brand can exist for that long, then it really must be effective right?

February 9, 2013 at 10:38 am (103 days ago)That’s so interesting. I’ve never heard of that brand, but I will have to check it out. I am of the philosophy that, if you do your research, you can find things that are just as good as the most expensive brands. It usually works for me.

February 9, 2013 at 10:54 am (103 days ago)I completely agree with you. Research is my bestfriend too. It’s been helping me as a mother and most especially as a professional. As most people would put it, all we need to do is to Google it.
